In the Memoirs, Madame Roland vigorously defends the Bureau de l’Esprit public, her husband’s initiative to spread printed journals and pamphlets across the country, which she insists was meant to unite provincial authorities under the banner of the Revolution.
Her opponents, especially Danton and Marat, condemned it as a reactionary. Madame Campan was lady-in-waiting to Marie Antoinette for many years, almost to the end. As such, she had access to her private life, but not necessarily to her public life.
